Cork College of FET-Bishopstown Campus goes Green
Cork College of FET – Bishopstown Campus is excited to announce two new sustainability initiatives aimed at making our campus greener and more eco-friendly.
Bottle and Can Collection for Charity
Our first initiative focuses on collecting returnable bottles and cans to support Cork University Hospital’s Children’s Charity. This idea was born from our proactive Campus Green Committee, who noticed the accumulation of bottles and cans around the campus. They reached out to the Three Johnnies at Cork University Hospital, who were thrilled to collaborate. Now, we have three designated bins around the campus where students and staff can deposit their bottles and cans. In just one month, we’ve raised €70 for this wonderful cause!
Introducing 2Go Cups in the Canteen
The second initiative is the introduction of 2Go Cups in our canteen, promoting the principles of the circular economy. Spearheaded by the Green Committee, these reusable cups can be purchased for a €2 deposit and returned at any participating location. This initiative aims to significantly reduce the number of disposable cups used on campus.
A Step Towards a Greener Future
Valerie Cowman, Campus Manager, shared her enthusiasm for the project: “It’s really important to us to increase the sustainability of our campus and to embrace the principles of the circular economy. As a designated Centre of Excellence for Nearly Zero Energy Building (NZEB) and Retrofit education, and with our suite of Green Skills Micro-qualifications, we are leaders in sustainability education. It’s crucial for us to walk the walk as well as talk the talk. Congratulations to the Green Committee for leading these initiatives. I look forward to seeing more sustainable projects in the future.”
